The full form of CAD is Computer-aided design, which means creating, modifying, analyzing and optimizing any design using a computer. CAD Softwares are used by designers to enhance productivity and make precision designs. CAD Softwares are used by across industries like Manufacturing, Automobile, Aviation, electrical, civil, architectural, etc. CAD design engineer used CAD Software to make 2D and 3D design to create models prototypes 3d printing and also used for Analysis.

CAD is used:

  1. To Produce 2D or 3D Engineering drawings in Mechanical, civil, architectural or electrical industry.
  2. In Mechanical Industry, CAD is used to Creating concept design, Product Layout, strength and dynamic analysis of assembly.
  3. In civil and Architectural industry, CAD is used to create the 2D layout, plan, 3D elevations, Building Information Modelling (BIM), estimation, costing and rendering.

CAD Softwares are broadly 2 types.

  1. 2D CAD tools. These were developed in the early 1970s and rely on basic geometric shapes such as circles, rectangles, lines, etc. to create flat drawings.
  2. 3D CAD tools. More advanced software that was developed in the 1980s. It has improved graphics display capabilities that enable you to create realistic 3D images. You need professional training to master this software.

3D CAD software can be further categorized into:

  1. Wire-frame models. These have become old-fashioned and they create skeleton-like models with arcs and lines.
  2. Surface models. These create models by joining 3D surfaces. The background is not visible which makes the surface models quite realistic.
  3. Solid models. The most useful CAD models. They are a step up from surface models as they have added properties such as density, volume, and weight that make them resemble real physical objects. Solid models are utilized as prototypes to work on engineering designs.

SOLIDWORKS capabilities include:

  • 3D solid modeling–turn ideas and concepts into virtual 3D models
  • Conceptual design–begin 3D designs quickly using imported images, simple sketches, or scanned 3D data, and then add more details as the design evolves
  • Assembly Structure Planning: SOLIDWORKS Treehouse – quickly lay out your design assembly structure and then export to SOLIDWORKS to automatically create your CAD files
  • Direct Model Editing–manipulate and modify 3D geometry working directly on the 3D CAD model
  • Large assembly design–performance tools to handle even your biggest and most complex products and systems
  • Advanced surface design–generate complex organic shapes, including curve continuous (C2) surfaces
  • Sheet metal design–create sheet metal parts that can be easily manufactured
  • Weldments–quickly develop structural supports, frames, brackets, and bases
  • Plastic Part design–create plastic parts that can be easily molded
  • CAD Productivity Tools–special capabilities that help you work faster
  • Reverse engineering–work from 3D scan data generated from existing designs to speed new product creations
  • Mold design–generate molds and tooling to produce plastic, cast, and forged parts
  • Piping and tubing design–complete your design by adding hydraulic, pneumatic, and other systems
  • Electrical cable harness and conduit design–include necessary control, power, and other electrical systems in your design

SolidWorks software is an essential 3D Modelling tool for product design and analysis. And you can segregate this learning into Intermediate and Advanced Course Packages. If you are a beginner and want to learn Intermediate Level Course, the cost of Training may range from Rs. 11000 to Rs.20000. The advanced design course on SolidWorks is a customized Module based on the Requirements, which is cost based on the custom content and No. of hours needed to complete those modules.

You can get access to SolidWorks at no cost. Solidworks provides Students versions for learning purposes. Students can Check their School or University if they are part of the Solidworks education program. If your school/ university has access, you can use it in the lab or download it using the link here
